Friday is for . . . farkling

Tucker came home the other day and said, “we can’t play Rock-Paper-Scissors at preschool.” Now, I’m sure there is a good reason for this. Maybe it causes a lot of arguments and it’s not just that game that is banned from the classroom. It could be that it wasn’t an complete ban of the game from the entire school–maybe just the classroom. But, if Tucker is any indication, it has been banned from the school because the boy simply doesn’t know the rules and gets mad at his brother and just punches him in the gut!! Read more

C3 Conference 2011

I attended the C3 Conference at Fellowship Church in Grapevine way back in ’06 or ’07 (the year the conference packet was a big question mark.) I was profoundly impacted by all of the speakers, but specifically Andy Stanley’s talk. I remember he talked about having the courage to change things in your church, even if it would be really, really difficult.

I had the opportunity to attend the conference this year with a few people from Calvary Baptist Church. They have been attending the conference for many years as well. I didn’t know what, but I knew God was going to speak to me through this opportunity. Even though I am kind of “in between ministry assignments” right now, it was really great to go and “dream again.”

This years theme was “EXC3ED: Go Beyond What is Allowed.” Here is a Finale video that will give you a taste of the conference.

I will post later some of the nuggets of truth I took away from this year’s conference. I am very thankful for the opportunity to go and it was a great blessing! I really missed Jenny and the boys, but it was worth it to hear from the Lord in a powerful way!

Plus, we got to see some old friends from our church I served in while attending seminary; which was awesome! Mike and Kris Zumwalt were some youth workers. Jerrell and Brenda Fiske were youth workers as well and Brenda was the church secretary. And Ruby Tucker was Jenny’s prayer partner and our Tucker’s namesake. It was awesome to see them and catch up with all God is doing in their lives!

Bears Claim Win No. 20 With 68-59 Win at Illinois State

This is their third win in a road after two really hard back-to-back losses. This win gives them a tie for first in the MVC. I sure hope they will finish strong, win the Valley tournament to make sure and go to the “Big Dance.” The MVC isn’t getting a ton of “love” as a conference this year, so I think that the Bears need to win the tournament to go on and not leave it in the hands of the selection committee. Go BEARS!!

We are going to be at the Drake game on Tuesday night as Taylor is singing the National Anthem with the Children’s Choirs of Southwest Missouri before and we are going to stay and watch for win #21!

Pray for the Becks at Purdue BCM

beck familyPlease pray for the Becks today! They are serving Jesus in West Lafayette, IN at the Purdue BCM. Ben is my first cousin on my mother’s side. He and I were best men in each other’s weddings way back in the summer of 1995 (It was a very good year!). They are NAMB missionaries and I came across them on the Winter PrayerGram for students/collegiate ministries. If you think about it today, say a prayer for them and the students at Purdue that need to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ while they are attending college.

Love you guys!!

Black Eyed Moose(s)

I know it’s not proper English, but Taylor thinks it is funny to add the extra “s.” Here is a little Saturday night entertainment from our uber-creative boys. They do this a lot–they took a bunch of empty moving boxes and made a puppet stage for their stuffed animals. Tonight’s show is called “Dog Nite Live.” The special musical guest for the evening was the “Black Eyed Moose(s).” Here is a video of their song.

Advent Conspiracy

Check out this video about how much we spend each year on Christmas alone…staggering. ?Because of our reduction in income this year, we have decided to make our presents this year for people, which I hope will help our boys (and us) realize that Christmas is much more about giving than getting. ?Wow, what we could do if we leveraged what we had to help others instead of spend all of what we have on ourselves!

Enjoy…And then maybe do something about the contradiction. ?Learn more here at Advent Conspiracy.

You can also give to a great missions organization’s Christmas Offering?here that churches all around the world participate in each year. (By the way, 100% of this goes directly to the field…no administrative costs are taken out of this offering). ?You can drill wells. ?You can serve at your local homeless shelter. ?Give new toys to children who won’t have a Christmas this year. ?There is so much to do. You know the drill.

Thanks John for the gentle nudging, I had this post in my “drafts” for a month or so now–it needed to come out in the open! ?I needed to preach to myself here for a little bit, too!!

Hurricane Katrina…5 Years Later

MTP

Jenny and I are watching Meet the Press tonight on DVR…common place for us on Sunday nights. I didn’t realize that it has been 5 years since Hurricane Katrina. If you have a few minutes, I highly recommend watching the program online here. Brian Williams is actually sitting in for David Gregory for this episode.

Amazing how we time moves so quickly. But as was said on the segment, “That’s tough to look at…it was yesterday…it’s been five years.” ?A lot of great guests and smart discussion…sans Brad Pitt anyway. ?The footage from 5 years ago is powerful. ?Really enjoyed the last segment of roundtable discussion here.

Who are you listening to?

Tonight was our first baseball game for Taylor’s team. I am managing his team this year and it has been a lot of fun. We played really well but came up a bit short tonight. However, one big thing that I know I personally learned was that we all need to learn WHO we should listen to–in baseball…and especially in life. Read more

Edmonds feels pull of his family – STLtoday.com

For some reason or another, I have not always been a huge Edmonds fan.? Maybe it is those times when the game was on the line and he swung on ball four? There were probably more times when he made amazing, game-winning plays, but I would always go back to those that weren’t game winners.? Isn’t it funny how we always seem to gravitate to the negative in all situations?

Came across this article the other day about the fact that Edmonds may not even take a contract with the Milwaukee Brewers if it is offered to him because he wants to be around his family.? He didn’t play last summer and was around his family the entire time, which hasn’t happened ever in his lifetime.

“You just get comfortable in a certain life and it’s like just how you get comfortable playing baseball for so long,” Edmonds said. “You think that’s all you have and then you get home and realize there’s more to life. The family, having kids and how much they actually enjoy you being home.

“I got to take the kids to school and be there for my daughter’s 16th birthday. It’s just a different thing.

“Now I wake up some mornings and doubt myself for making this decision.”

Alright, maybe I am beginning to be a huge Edmonds fan.

What do you think?? Why do we often take for granted the great things in our lives?
